Alejandro Morales is the COO & Co-founder of STOA, based in Durham, NC. STOA is the tech and software team for small businesses that don't have one.

Most small businesses run on one piece of software that does most of the job. The rest gets done by hand, by people, forever. STOA builds the part the software can't do, next to the software the business already runs. The software keeps working the way it does today.

STOA sells no software and takes no commission from any software company. So its advice has no hidden stake. When an owner faces a technology decision, STOA puts the options in writing: what each one costs, what each one risks, and what STOA would pick and why. The owner decides. If it needs building, STOA builds it. STOA also acts as a fractional CTO for businesses that need a technology lead without a full-time hire.

Alejandro works business first. What the operation needs comes before any tool, AI included. He says plainly where AI pays off and where it does not.

Outside STOA, Alejandro leads the XPX Triangle chapter as President, chairs public relations for Rotary Capital City, and mentors in UNC's ECON 125 program. He was born in Venezuela, lived in Spain, and settled in North Carolina. He speaks English and Spanish, and he is available for shows in both languages.

Signature topics

Topics your audience will use

  1. Your software won't do the one thing you need. Now what?

Why most owner-led businesses hit the same wall, and how to build around it without replacing anything.

You leave with: One question to ask your software vendor this week.

  2. What vendor lock-in costs a small business.

Contracts, closed data and API limits, from the buyer's side. STOA sells no software, so it has no stake in the answer.

You leave with: A one-page checklist to test how locked in you are before your next renewal.

  3. The manual work your software leaves behind.

Where owner-led businesses lose hours each week to tasks their software can't automate, and how to find them.

You leave with: One question to find which manual task in your operation your software could take over.

  4. Build or buy, when you have no tech team.

How an owner decides what to build, what to buy, and when to leave it alone.

You leave with: A simple way to sort each tool into build, buy, or leave alone.

  5. Using AI on your own business data.

What an owner can build on their own, and where it stops.

You leave with: One task to try on your own records, and the point where you should get help.

  6. What a fractional CTO does for a small business.

Who owns technology decisions when there is no tech team, and what it costs to get them wrong.

You leave with: The questions to ask before your next software decision.

  4. What should an owner check in a software contract before the next renewal?
  5. What manual work does a small business repeat every week that its software should handle?
  6. How does an owner decide what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone?

Talking points and frameworks

Talking points

  • Your business knows everything already. It is in your software. The problem is getting to it.
  • An IT company keeps your systems running. STOA decides what gets built on them, and builds it.
  • STOA sells no software and takes no commission from any software company, so the advice has no hidden stake.
  • The software keeps running. We build the missing piece next to it.

Frameworks

  1. Extend before you replace. Copy your data out first. Build on the copy. The live system stays untouched, so the risk is near zero. Replace a system only after the copy has proven the data is right.
  2. Build, buy, or leave alone. For each decision, write down the options, what each costs, what each risks, and what you would pick and why.
